Hire a Pakistani? Are You Crazy?
Have you ever heard a story of someone actually saying this? No? Read below!
You wouldn’t believe how many times I used to hear this at the beginning of my staffing company. This question was most common during the early days of 2008 – 2013 when I was feverishly trying to introduce Pakistani developers to the wrong American’s business owners. I would hear some pretty nasty comments from those individuals like, “Hire a Pakistani? They hate America, why would I give them any money?” or “You’re an American, why are you funding Pakistan?” I shuttered so badly when I would hear those remarks. It made me furious. It made me try harder to find more educated Americans that were more tolerant of other people.
“You never truly know someone until you work with them on a daily basis.”
Both Pakistan and the United States have their conservative populations that fear the unknown. I found out during those years which parts of the United States to avoid because those parts of the USA are deeply rooted in their ways, and they fear change or people unlike themselves. I was beating my head against the wall trying to convince someone to give a Pakistani a chance when those people wouldn’t even give a neighbor a chance if they were slightly different.
I used to tell people all the time that raised an eyebrow to Pakistan, “You never truly know someone until you work with them on a daily basis.” I continued, “Working with someone is the only true way to see others first-hand and without the bias of the media.” I strongly believe this! Because I have had such excellent relationships with Pakistanis for so long, that is why GoPakistan.com exists now. I have to do my part to get as many Pakistanis, that will listen to me, up to international standards so that Pakistan can stand out.
Throughout my professional career, I learned to target our sales efforts to American regions and American cities that were much more tolerant and willing to work with other nationalities. I still found plenty of resistance, but this time it was for something different. The opposition now came from people that had been burned by offshore programmers in the past.
Mainly those prospects had used developers from another Asian subcontinent country (that shall not be named) and were adamant about not trying that again. So you see, I’ve had a lot people question me over the past ten years about hiring Pakistanis, but I don’t give up on a good thing or good people.
Yes, I will admit that a lot Pakistanis are rough around the edges, especially when it comes to being able to present themselves professionally. If anyone gets angry with me over this, then you have a serious denial problem. However, I have been able to train and guide many Pakistanis and together we chipped away those rough edges, and now they shine like diamonds. I say to the world, give Pakistanis a chance and give them proper guidance and motivation and you will NOT be disappointed in their efforts.
Here is what I need from Pakistanis to help me in my mission to represent you all on GoPakistan.com and via Allshore Virtual Staffing. I need you all to take learning and education very seriously. Not just take learning a skill seriously, but take how to professionally communicate seriously too. You have to use communication in everything you do. You can be the best damn software developer on the planet, but you are worthless if you can’t understand project requirements.
If you are reading this article right now and have made it this far, then I assume you know that English is the world’s universal language. The world runs on the English language, the better you can read, write, speak and understand it, the faster your career will rise.
I know English is a second language for most in Pakistan and I applaud you for being able to speak two languages, I can’t. I’ve tried, and I get too frustrated and quit. Why do I quit? Because I don’t need to know any other language to be successful, I already know the main one. If I had to learn a second language out of necessity, then I would master it. If you genuinely want to succeed on a larger scale, then learn English inside and out.
Did you know that there are American’s that can’t even speak English properly? They foul up the language severely, and it immediately makes them look less intelligent. So if American’s who fail with English seem less intelligent, imagine how people view a foreign person that can’t communicate clearly.
Today I told a content writer in Pakistan, that if he had perfect English writing skills he would be worth his weight in gold. With so many people needing blogs written these days, people that will produce high-quality content for an affordable wage can earn as much money as they have time in the day to work.
So, NO I’m not crazy for hiring 125 Pakistani people, I’m smart. I found a fantastic talent pool that works just as hard as anyone on the planet. I have been criticized for exploiting Pakistanis, but that criticism comes from uneducated fools. They don’t understand that I am not enslaving people. People have a right to come work for me and they have a right to leave for a more competitive salary.
My people stay because they are well paid, they are well taken care of. They know their leader loves and appreciates them. See how I am unapologetic about working with Pakistanis? I believe in you guys so much, that I don’t care what negative things people may throw at me. People fear what they don’t know and that is their problem, not yours so remember that, if anyone ever says to you, “Hire a Pakistani? Are you crazy?”
Lastly, I need you all to invite your friends and share GoPakistan content. The reason is not for me; it’s for you. It’s for your children and future generations that need to learn and see this content. I’m going to give my critiques fast and harsh, I also promise to write insightful stories based on true experiences. It’s for improving people and their chance for success.
